The killer, Richard Speck, eventually became America's symbol of evil. For all his brutality, Speck was careless, and after hearing the chilling testimony of a survivor, the jury took only 45 minutes to convict him. He was sentenced to death, but the execution was never carried out. Speck settled in to a seedy prison life filled with drugs, sex and money.
